Mysore trip

Pleasant weather and beautiful view points define Mysore which is around 7 hrs far from manipal and lesser than that from Bangalore. Under the title of 'conference on clinical trials', we managed to steal 2 days of official leaves from our (so called) busy schedule. I mean conference was of course there, but just for one day. All but me started in a private vehicle an after noon a day before. Because of some social commitment I decided to take a night bus and joined them the next day morning.One of my colleague Dr Fahad was our navigator as he had studied his under graduate in Mysore. He executed his job quite beautifully which left us wondering what he had done during his MBBS undergraduate life :-)

On the day after the conference, we went 1st to the famous Mysore palace to observe its beauty in fairly good daylight. Actually it looks more beautiful with lighting at night but with time restriction we had to rapidly finish palace trip. A transient yet heavy rain meanwhile, helped a shopkeeper increase his Mysore speciality business. Few of us bought some expensive sandalwood soaps. The main attraction of the shop was Mysore silk saris of course, but they were too costly to be a part of our shopping. Good ones cost around 15,000 and more!! The snap above shows just a part of the palace both horizontally and depth wise.

The next shop was musical fountain and vrindavan garden which was pretty flower some. However the concept of music co ordinated fountain is fairly common by now. The next point - Chamundi Hill - was a reluctant agreement from few members of the troop because of whole day's exhaustion but in the end everyone liked the view of almost half of the city, including bright yellow Mysore palace right in the centre of the snap above. The breeze there was also pleasantly cool and there is a village on the top of the hill, the entry to which is closed by late evening.
However, the most memorable part of the trip was due next morning. In spite of being totally tired of the previous day, we were forced to wake up early to reach a place called gopalswamy betta at the right time. The perfect time to reach there according to our navigator was 7 in the morning but we reached there by 8. The place is around 80 km from Mysore city.

But even at 8 it was adorably cool and cloudy and as everything shrinks in cold I also constricted myself to try and conserve the body heat. The touch of breeze to the skin was so pleasant that we didn't want to move at all.

Just a km of trekking ahead, you will find classic scenic natural beauty, deer-troops and ele-groups. If anyone is making plan of Mysore early morning visit to this place is strongly recommended.

Its my brain - not a TeraByte capacity memory disk!!

I have been a great admirer of the tennis legend Roger Federer, who apparently doesn't feel shy to openly express his emotions in front of the whole world as I read in the newspaper today. Motivated by his character, I thought let me also unload bucket full of my feelings in front of my small little blog world. I am quite overwhelmed with the amount of study I am confronting. Ever increasing wealth of information and extreme volatility of the subject pharmacology, are testing the capacity of my gyri and sulci. Easy to guess, I have an exam due on this Saturday and the course material is the vastest of all the sessionals we had before. Plus being a final yr MD PG we are expected to know lot more than we actually do!! I wish my brain had the capacity to store information whenever given in whichever format and processing part could be done later, precisely the way computers work. I even tried that- just to store info and process it a week later. But a pop-up window appeared in front of my eyes which spelled - the file you are asking for does not exist anymore - !! Quite expected. N number of such experiences I have had, but contrary to other experiences this one is not a good teacher!! For everyone I suppose. But you know, even after you process the data and make your own zip files (may be notes or flash cards), its not uncommon to lose files. That discourages me sometimes.

Today I was on expert duty for MBBS practical examination, a part of which is spotters. Before the students came I was supposed to take care of the arranged ones to prevent question theft!! And as you can see, I have outclassed any possible competitor who could claim to do the job better!! Open mouth , bent nape of neck and extended legs give sufficient cues of high degree of alertness! Phenomenal catch by my friend. He ensured absolute silence till he reached me and even after that.Well done.By the way the incidence might look funny, it was not. Had ny HOD seen it I would have got rash scolding. Luckily I got up in time. But laughed quite big on first look of the snap.Wallet on the table instructs any possible interferer to take his/her share and get lost I think.

A board which is often unliked and very frequently disregarded especially when you find it near railway crossing or some traffic signal while rushing to the office. But you see, its location matters a lot as to how is it respected by bypassers. Classic example is here in manipal. To control rash biking and harrassment to girls , Varsity people have got these boards placed at every corner of the roads. Kept darmant during daytime, they hit the middle of the road at around 8 giving shiney reflections to rapidly approaching headlights, with the hope that they may slow down.All don't succeed but few of them definitely get the due respect, the ones right in front of the girls hostels!! No wonder. Who wouldn't want to stop and look around when asked to do so in front of girls hostel that too after 8 pm?? :-)

Manipal Hostel Life

'A Home Away From Home' is probably the best way we can sum up the essence of hostel life in a sentence.

A student's life is a medley of getting up in the morning, having a quick bath, followed by a very quick breakfast, running to reach the college on time and staying awake at class and wishing you were anywhere but here (maybe at the juice center or at Coffee Day).

The lifeline of the Hostel is the TV Room - be it a cricket match, movie or Formula 1, the power output of the students is enough to shatter the glass.

By then it is 7:30 and you are looking for someone in the hostel - where do you go? Not anywhere but the Mess, which provides nutritious food for all who care to come. For all those who don't and who are too broke to go out, you can visit the night canteen - coffee or tea for all those late night studying students and Maggi, Omelette, chips for those who want a midnight snack. But better get back fast as the clock strikes 12 and Boom! Its birthday time..... chocolate cake, gifts, eggs, birthday bumps - are all part and parcel of a hostel birthday party, an unforgettable experience.

The most dreaded job, the nightmare of a hostelite - Washing clothes.

All in all, life in the hostel is a blend of ups and downs, sharing of emotions, developing the friendship of a lifetime or just becoming strong enough to face the world. This is a place where your friends are your family with whom you share beautiful memories you would live to tell!

A sharpener

What made you the most happy person in the world when you were of 6 or say in 2nd standard or so? Not much interested into man, machine ,money or power ; the kid of that small age had its say in front of the friends when it gets a new fluorescent colour sharpener and a brand new long pencil!! Happiness takes the kid into the sky when it succeeds in getting envying facial expressions of the enemy group. A sharpener in the snap is not a new one though, it was sufficient to drag us in the memories of school days when given a closer look. So innocent happiness and tension free life had been buried in the back of mind with growing insight into the bigger world. Well, at least this was the case in my childhood as today's kids are more techno-savy and pencil can hardly do good to them!!

May not be as fascinating for everyone to get to see a rainbow but for me, it certainly is. Having stayed in the cement cities for most of my life, I got excited when vivek pointed me the rainbow, which from that angle , appeared to sit on the head of the girls hostel or to put it in a better way it was crowning the stars of manipal!! I relished that look for few seconds and ...

... we headed of to parivar sweets. On the way , just quarter a kilometer from previous gathering point, we met the rainbow once again. This time a larger version as allowed by open fields in manipal. It was just awesome. unable to capture the whole of it, I was compelled to accommodate it in a small video attached here. To the best of my imagination , it appeared to cut a globe out of the big sky and the globe appeared as if seeing the Earth from the satellite.

Pharmacology update 2009

Not many colleges have it. Its an inter college competition between postgraduates of medical and pharmacy colleges under manipal university. 6-8 minutes of presentation on any of the recent developments in the subject, followed by question answer session till total of 10 minutes. substantiality of the topic , presentation skills, clarity of facts and lastly defense ; are the criteria considered for prizes. Initially 6 candidates are screened from each college which makes a total of 18 to compete in final. The one held on 23rd of march 2009 was my second appearance in the finals. These time however, I managed to clinch the 3rd place. In academic competitions I haven't been an achiever though I put good effort (at least I think so). So a win here brought me a great feeling of pleasure.

Well, on the same day I was exhausted to think anything else but fresh next morning, I literally drowned into philosophy. I flashed back into 25 years of my life to recollect the moments when I felt like happiest person in the world. Surprisingly I could remember only 3 to 4 in the whole 25yrs!! I don't think many people will have more than that. Well , blessed with the optimistic attitude , I decided to think more about next 25 rather than spent 25 and try doubling these type of moments. Anyway, philosophy stays at its place but these update was a great learning experience.

The last year of my college life is driving me to do all those which is ideally done when u start a college life, but I never did!! Playing with my looks, I started with the famous French cut beard which apparently makes someone look more mature and probably manly too. But when I checked myself in French I found it more scary rather than anything else!! Just for the sack of having it I maintained it for 10 days. Today morning while removing it I thought let me have some snaps with just a mustache which I am never gonna maintain in my life most probably. 'Pain full' seminar

The title of my last seminar topic was 'pharmacotherapy of pain' which undoubtedly is one of the major concern of medical fraternity today. I tried to through some insight into how and why should pain happen.However,it so happened that this aspect (that is pathophysiolgy of pain) itself ate away most of the time and in the time bound presentation, I eventually ended up compromising with important points about therapeutic aspects. Expectedly , lack of pharmacotherapy in an MD- pharmacology seminar was heavily criticized by senior faculties. They were of opinion that understanding of pathophysiological aspects was fantastic but title doesn't go with the content. As also said by my dad that when u r presenting something at a certain level it is taken for granted that the title and abstract are representative of the material. If the title is not befitting it defeats the whole purpose and reasons for which the audience has arrived. Very well accepted. I always learn or at least try to learn from criticisms but you know, after taking so much of pain to search and prepare content and deliver it properly especially for the topics which are a kind of difficult, one always deserves and wishes to have a word or a two of appreciation before being receptive to accept the pain of criticism!! At that point of time I realized why management of pain is important

My flame

Its not about my own 'flame' as several manipalites might have guessed!! But about our short and unexpected meeting with the true flame. Being an integral part of many Indian ceremonies and 1 of the 5 basic components of earth structure and being associated with Olympics, The Flame conveys multiple positive meanings off which we could not think of even a single when the oil in our cooking utensil pulled the flame from the gas stove on which it was sitting!! The intensity is not so obvious in the capture , but its not tough to understand that when it was at its maximum we didn't have the guts to store it behind the camera lens.

Considering the shape of the vessel it was hard to find the way the fire traveled from below upwards but I was in no position to do R & D on that. Plus in a sort of panic, I killed one of the very basic funda of physics. I tried to blow it!!And for a fraction of a second, it spread in the area 2 to 3 times of vessel's. Lucky enough were we, for not having any switches nearby! Well, I realized my mistake immediately followed by a single wise decision to turn off the gas at least.

I had been a guy of physics in my school and the 'blow mistake' was really blowing my head. I recovered a bit after a second attempt blow by my friend who was witnessing all these happenings throughout and was happy to reconsider my physics, at least better than others!!

When it was over we realized the positive connotations associated with the flame and at my age 1st to come to my mind was expectedly marriage!! I wished I had a girl of my choice standing aside so that we could use the opportunity and finish our 'saat phere' around the fire!! (for my parents-I was just kidding!)

Thousand pillars temple in moodbidri

Well , guys before I deliver few details about the title, let me tell you the reason why I could visit the temple.The chief editor of this blog , Dr Vishal Bhat got tied into a permanent relationship with Dr Swathi.So many many congratulations and best wishes to him on behalf of all the blog readers.And the venue of marriage was karkala , from where moodbidri is about 15 kms.

Moodbidri is approx. 35 kms from mangalore.Its a small town, basically famous for being worship place for Jains. 1000 pillars temple with 2.5 meters tall sculpture of the god chandranantha swami , is probably the oldest and has been the main interest of tourists.

Happy with the permission granted by our HOD of skipping most of morning session , we started at 10 am from manipal.(To mention here , our HOD has been declared 2nd best in pharmacology departments in India according to my unofficial sources).Bike ride to the destination was quite pleasant with beautiful road and surroundings.The sun was burning hot but due to enough greeneries around, we experienced cool breeze almost throughout.And we were at the temple within an hr.

The 1st snap below is copied from another website (slide.com) be cause of 'photography prohibited' label right at the entrance on the pillar called 'mahastambha' (understandably not there in snaps!!).

After the prayer we started counting the pillars and tried using some mathematical formulas also but soon gave up the mammoth task considering that there will definitely be thousand pillars as people don't lie in this matters.quite logical.isn't it?Actually the number is not so obvious from gross appearance of the front view but considering the length and inclusion of 'inside the wall pillars' , I would agree.The phenomenal thing is that no 2 pillars are same!!
People often try hard to achieve and maintain symmetry but here the hard work was put on to avoid symmetry.

Awakening

As a part of of our tutorship we get to perform the duty as an 'expert' in undergraduate exams.Well , the word 'expert' is supposed to carry the its meaning, but in reality it hardly happens as I learned recently.I did duty on three different days and was sitting at a reasonable distance from the senior faculties taking exams, to be able hear the questions asked to undergraduate without putting an extra psychological pressure on the student by my presence.I succeeded in keeping the UG free of load but at the end of the day I was the one in pressure!!2 0f us were posted in the duty and I saw my colleague's face nearly 10 times during the exam to make sure that she is also not sure of the answer of the just asked question then, lest I would have definitely gone into depression!!It was understandable for her being a 1st year PG but for me, a 2nd yr, not at all.Anyway, we understood each other's situation and worked out a constructive long term plan anticipating 5imtes tougher questions of PG exams.
We make 2 coffee breaks in the day (most of the times we don't really have a reason for coffee, as we are not into a headbanging work ,but we go as a part of habit.)The idea was to make coffee induced central stimulation fruitful.No nonacademic talk and intensive reading at least for 1hr after coffee.Yet to see whether it works out or not.
Actually its not that we don't know the matter.The fact is that we don't recollect when suddenly
faced it.Today only I read an article published in 'THE HINDU' , a famous newspaper here.The article was about the causes of memory loss and way to overcome it.Out of the 2 main theories of
1. time induced lapse of information storage and
2.temporal confusibility
the 2nd one was proved to be the main reason.Scientists say that if you happen to know 2 things similar to each other u tend to have problems in recollecting either of them.More the number of matter and more the number of similarities, it becomes increasingly difficult to recollect any.And if that is the case than its not a good news for us because pharmacology- the subject of effect of drugs- is all about similarities (more often) and fewer differences which get under shadowed.Booster doses of reading like vaccines are very much required for any subject especially pharmacology and probably this is the place where 'apparently' brighter students take the piece of cake

Manipal University Convocation 2008

The Annual Convocation of Manipal University will be held at Manipal on Saturday, 22^nd November 2008. Application forms for conferment of degrees/diplomas in person or in absentia are available at the Offices of the institutions of Manipal University and the graduates/postgraduates can obtain the same from their respective alma mater. The completed application forms must reach the Head of the respective institutions on or before November 8, 2008.

Saraswatipuja (The Goddess of education) is actually done on the auspicious day of 'Vasant Panchmi' and 'Bengalis' celebrate durgapuja (The Goddess of power) on the day of dashera (Vijaya dashmi).However , its been trend since years in our department to celebrate to worship The goddess saraswati during navratri.Last year I missed it for my home trip for 'dandiya' (stick play'.

The setup is created in the departmental library.The junior most postgraduates are given the responsibility or say opportunity to arrange and decorate everything

More traditionally, along with the goddess , pen, pencils and notebooks are also kept. We kept 4 most commonly used pharmacology textbooks.This is what I like very much about Indian customs.They possess great amount of respect and love for everything which help them move forward

The code for guys on the day is kurta paijama as we have adopted and girls should wear saris(preferably yellow if it is being celebrated on vasant panchmi).The latter part was missing here

The puja per se is over and aarti is being circulated.It is a form of blessings to extend it s reach to each individual.

'Aarti' is followed by 'prasada' usually a sweet and again a form of blessing.Probably 'the most loved by kids' part of the puja.I believe that few of elderlies can also be considered 'kids' for that matter!

Sukhdi nu sukh

Probably the most common home made sweet in Gujarat is 'sukhdi' and there is a reason why its so.The most simple recipe, less time consuming, nutritious and of course awesome taste.And for the same reason, we, technosavvy guys, decided to give a try in our new house.Ya, by d way we 4 gujjus have moved out of hostel into a private flat for want of comfort cum luxury and typical Gujarati food-for which we have hired a cook.Well, the home we've moved into, was given unfurnished!!And therefore, the kitchen has been turned into a clothing cupboard(!!), left one corner, where the hot plate was show cased ; just to remember that its a kitchen!

Initial few days in our mansion(!! I felt it that way in a first shot as we had moved from small cozy 2seater room of hostel to a comfortable 2bedroom flat.), went dry with busy all-having
little interest in households.The scenario changed when I returned from my inter medical chess tournament held in pondicherry.Enthusiastic me, was motivated by my mom with a very simple and fast recipe of a sweet dish.Coincidently all four of us were at home and the plan of sukhdi got unanimous support from a group of gujjusweet-starved people.

The one below is quite unusual.You won't see Jwalit doing that quite often.(The one on right and who believes that he has got musician's fingers- made to perform successful angioplasties.He is posted in cardiology these days) And the second guy with a 'monalisa' smile, actually is apprehensive and eagerly waiting for the final product of our experiment.

Ok fine. Everyone has contributed equally in a tedious task of cooking!!Noteworthy here are some deos in the background.As I said , kitchen is serving a cupboard purpose.

Again an unusual catch.Punished to wash the vessels for not contributing actively to any other procedure.To conclude, cooking is a great fun-of course once in a while!

MIT Students Design Ferrari of The Future !!

Not quite... But they will be the first and only team from Asia to take part in an international racing competetion known as Formula SAE (FSAE). This event is a competetion for student designed racing cars, organised by the Society of Automotive Engineering and 140 teams from all over the world will be taking part. The Competetion is run by the Mechanical engeneering department and challenges the teams to design, build, test and race a small high performance racing Car.

The car designed by out very own Manipal Institute Of Technology (MIT) students has been give a trendy name - the FM-08. It weighs just 59 KGs and has an optimixed mild steel frame with TIG welding, CNC machining for bending processes among various other features. The competetion this year is being held in the land of the Ferrari's - Italy.

So watch out guys... the next Ferrari may just be rolling out from MANIPAL!!!

Attributed to my laziness, I didn't take task of sharing my pondy visit experiences.And now , when I am feeling like writing something , its too late to recollect those experiences.Anyway, my todays post goes back much beyond it.Its an admission of what I and my X-roomy used to do during our jobless undergraduate days.

Both having fairly creative mindset (my self praise habit doesn't seem to be affected by age induced maturity!!) , fell in a sort of tussle of who is better out of 2!!And discussion carried us to an unusual competition which ,according to me , really tests your open mindedness!Here 1 person says something and the next one has to say something totally irrelevant to the previous statement without a pause.I don't exactly remember the results of our game (Well, I think, had it been favorable for me, I would have definitely remembered!!) but the positive outcome was a invention of a new and probably mind sharpening game.It really tests broadness or vastness of your thoughts.Can be played with any number of people but lesser the number , tougher the game.And undoubtedly most the statements generated will be funny.

I recollected this experience while having the dinner today with my colleagues on peak of their pj mood.The guy who write s poems in this as well as his own blog is the one who has got a smart ability to justify virtually any kind of bluff, that too instantly and I got an idea to test him with this.And out of the players he was the first to go out!!It clearly says , possibly he can think of 100 relevant alternatives but not the one which is off bit (Big time entrepreneurs probably possesses this )

Pondy visit

One of the union territories of India- pondicherry is located at the east coast and is quite famous for Aurobindo Ashram and auroville.We (Pharmacology PGs) happened to visit pondycherry to attend an educational workshop cum conference in one of the very good medical colleges-JIPMER(jawaharlal institute of postgraduate medical education and research).And our 5days trip turned out to be an extremely good experience of very informative conference during day time followed by great hangouts during late evening and night time.This and next few posts will be about our 'tourally' mixed with some academic stuff!!

We (9 of us were there) started from manipal in a qualis to mangalore from where we had a train to chennai.Obviously at the beginning of any trip we were charged up and had a good active time.unused to such energy explosions, Dr Vivek finally had a leisure time in a comfortable sleep kit in AC 3tier of west coast express.His love for sleep shows off in the snap above!!

Well , the journey ahead of chennai to pondy was to be covered by an ordinary private bus which
squeezed entire sweat out of us and when we reached our hotel all were exhausted, leave Dr Samik , who really loves planning and management.Understandably , he was the one who finished formality at the reception counter of hotel 'Sai Ram' and we moved into our rooms just to fall flat on bed till next morning!!

Anticipating a tough session on the first day , college people had arranged a nice high tea in the morning reflected by smiles on our faces.Starting from left me, Dr Vishaal , Dr Samik

In a hope of getting Hollywood break sometime , I always stand tall and handsome in front of camera.Dr Anil grabbed the opportunity to click a natural of mine , while I was hogging Carrot halwa!!If given a choice, I would go for a good food dish rather than Hollywood.

A perfect place for relaxation ,the beach , was not more than 2 km from our hotel.We took an auto and reached there in 10 mins.Its a rocky beach and that too with a very steep slop and therefore not so swimmer friendly.But with extremely pleasant view and soft cool breeze.Another beach where we couldn't go , is a sandy one and about 15 kms away.To mention here , this was a conscious effort from my side to look ignorant about being clicked.I succeeded probably!
